Zeller Leads Washington HS To 4th Indiana Championship In Seven Seasons

Mar 27, 2011 3:59 AM

Cody Zeller won his third championship in four seasons as Washington took a 61-46 victory over Culver Academies in the Class 3A Indiana state championship.

"It's definitely fun winning it," said Zeller, who finished with 20 points and 18 rebounds. "It gets better every time. I could have never done it without my teammates and coaches."

Washington has won four state championships in seven seasons, with Cody's brothers Luke and Tyler also winning as seniors.

Washington coach Gene Miiller, in his sixth season, said it's "been a special era."

"It's a tremendous time in Washington basketball, that's for sure," Miiller said. "It's been a great ride and it's meant a lot to our community and our school. The Zellers have been great players and great people. But I think you also have to look at it and think about those other guys, too. . . . (The Zellers) had great role players around them."

Cody Zeller will attend Indiana in the fall.

Indiana coach Tom Crean has landed two elite prospects in Hanner Perea and Kevin Farrell.

Joining those two five-star prospects are Ron Patterson, a four-star, and Peter Jurkin, a three-star.

Signing Jeremy Hollowell, who is the No. 39-ranked prospects in the Rivals150, would ensure the Hoosiers the top spot in the rankings, writes Rivals.com's Jerry Meyer.

Cody Zeller Named Indiana's Gatorade Player Of The Year

Mar 17, 2011 11:56 AM

Cody Zeller has been named Indiana’s boys basketball player of the year by Gatorade. Zeller will play for Indiana this fall.

Zeller’s brother, Tyler, won the award in 2008.

“Cody Zeller plays the game the way it’s supposed to be played,” Evansville Memorial coach Rick Wilgus said in a press release. “Emotionally, he never gets too high or too low and he always makes the plays that need to be made. He seems like a great kid to coach and he is not affected by all the attention he receives.”

NCAA Coaches Concerned About Rising Transfer Rate

Mar 6, 2011 3:09 PM

Eight years ago, the NCAA started monitoring the number of players transferring to other Division I basketball programs. That number grew from 385 players in 2003-04 to 442 in 2008-09.

“We’re an instant gratification society,” said Michigan State coach Tom Izzo, also the current president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. “Kids want to star and start immediately.”

According to rosters of the 346 NCAA Division I or transitional Division I programs this season, 207 had at least one player who started his career at a different Division I program.

“We’re living in a time where if things don’t go well in a job or a marriage, the easy thing to do is look elsewhere instead of trying to remedy the problem where you’re at,” said Greg McDermott, in his first season at Creighton after a four-year stay at Iowa State was dogged by a steady stream of transfers. “Unfortunately, that’s the world we live in today.”

Of the 65 teams that made the 2010 NCAA Tournament, 35 featured at least one Division I transfer.

Jordan Taylor Scores 39 As Badgers Roll

Mar 4, 2011 10:19 AM

Jordan Taylor scored a career-high 39 points to lead Wisconsin to a 77-67 victory over Indiana Thursday night.

Taylor shot 11-of-19 from the field, 7-of-8 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 10-for-10 from the stripe.

The Badgers moved to within one game of second-place Purdue (25-5, 14-3) and they close the regular season Sunday at first-place Ohio State (28-2, 15-2).

"Jordan just did some things that very few people, I think, can do against any team at any time," UW coach Bo Ryan said. "He got to the line, attacked and drew the fouls. He did everything a point guard should do.”
